“What on Earth am I Here For?”

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

It is not an accident that you have read this blog post. Everything is well-planned by God. This time, you will know reasons on why we are living in this world. What is our purpose?

I’ve got the blog post title from the book entitled “The Purpose-Driven Life” written by Rick Warren. I urge you to read that book because if you really want to know your purpose in life, you’ll know the Five Purposes in Life from it. But before I will name them one by one, I will just share something to you. Before, I have many questions which are left unanswered. Some things that happened to me are unexplicable. What I mean is : “Do I deserved what’s happening to me?” or “Why is it happening to me?” I have asked those questions to God so many times. It was inevitable for me to be frustrated everytime I failed to get what I have wished for even though I am very deserving enough to have those. I had many regrets and failures that I could not accept because of my pride. But now, I do not know how to thank Mr. Rick Warren for publishing this book that I am reading that taught me much all about eternal truths. This biblical book which MUST and SHOULD be read by everyone contains 40 chapters. On the introduction, the author urged the reader to read ONLY ONE CHAPTER per day for the total of 40 days of transformation. We all know that 40 days has many significance in the Bible. So, the author also explained the reasons why we should follow the 40-day rule of reading the book by stating scenarios from the Bible.

According to him, there are the Five Purposes of Life:

  1. We were planned for God’s Pleasure.

Our first purpose is to love God as God loves us. God really loves us more than we expected. In fact, God is willing to forgive us from all our sins whatever we have done. God wants us to become His friends so we must open our heart for His Love. Remember that Jesus Christ let Himself to be crucified so that our Father in Heaven will forgive us from our sins. So since we were born sinful in this world, therefore, we’ll not be forgiven by God if not because of His Son. That proves that God’s love for each of us can never be measured. It is one in a million people in this world who will crucify Himself in a cross to death only for our sins to be forgiven by God. Take note also that we do not live for ourselves, but rather, we live for God’s purpose for each of us.

2.  We were formed for God’s Family.

We are in this world not just to live, but rather, we are here to be a part of His Family. We do not live here in this world only for ourselves, but we also live for other people. Since no man is an island, we should look for something where we should belong to. Yes, we must be affiliated by a particular group, a group of believers. That’s our second purpose in our life :”Love others as you love God.” That is the implication of the 4th to 10th Commandments of God, where the First three is the love of God.

Besides, praying is not enough. Though we were made by God for a particular task, we will not fulfill this second purpose without being attached o His Body, the Church.

3. We were created to Become Like Christ.

Although we could never be a Christ, we were born to be like Him. We should develop our spiritual character the same as that of Jesus Christ. But, as Plato also implied, that perfection will be achieved if we die. I will give you a factual example, are you curious about what is the image of our Heavenly Father? Actually, He looks exactly like His Son Jesus Christ. The Latter did what exactly His Father has told Him to do when He came in this world. That is exactly what we must do, to obey what Jesus Christ have commanded us to do to be like Christ. The process of becoming like Christ is what we called Discipleship. We could not fulfill this third purpose without being one His followers.

4. We were shaped for Serving God.

All of us has our own uniqueness. All of us are given gifts from God whether they are ascribed or achieved. Such blessings are not given to us just to show them off to others, but we should use them to serve God. We serve God by means of serving other people. Also, remember that our looks and our personality is exactly shaped by God for a purpose and not by accident. We are given capabilities to think, to see, to smell, to hear, to touch, to taste and to do our will in order to serve the Lord, not just to be comfortable by ourselves. An old man who was lame for 48 years was miraculously healed by Jesus by just telling the man to get up. He was healed not only to be able to walk by himself, but rather, he was healed in order to show the power of Christ and for the man to serve God. Ministry is the other term of serving God.

All of us have our own weaknesses. God will use us if we will admit those imperfections and flaws proudly to other people since nobody’s absolutely perfect. We must boast our weaknesses for His glory. It is not enough to be freed with those, but we should be contented with those weaknesses because they will be used to serve the Lord.

5. We were Made for a Mission.

I know that many of us are aware of our own mission in our life. That mission must be accomplished before leaving the earthly life. In Sociology, there is a phrase called th “game of life”, a game wherein you must know your role in society. It is almost similar in discovering our particular purpose in life: our mission. Our Ministry is our service to believers, while our Mission is our service to unbelievers. Although all of them are very important, this fifth purpose is the most important one for us to be done one Earth.

What is that mission? Introducing people to God! We should not keep what we have known on how to prepare for eternity to other people as a secret.  It must be shared to others. Besides, if just one person will be going to Heaven because of any one of us, we will have made a difference in eternity. So, if we already know how to achieve forgiveness, peace and on how to prepare for eternity, we must immediately tell that to others who do not know about it since it is one of our tasks in this world that should be done successfully.

Note: The above mentioned is just a summary of our life’s purpose. You should read the book in order to fully understand what God intends us to do and why we should do them. It’s a very little information of the details to be relied on. I’m just giving you an idea on why you must read this book as soon as possible before it’s too late. I do hope that this post would help you to change your life.

God bless you.
